Modus Magazine / May Issue
Christie Ferdinando, the Art Director at Sunday Publishing recenlty got in contact to create a cover and feature illustration for the May Issue of Modus. For the cover we went with the idea of rows of sporting lanes shot from above, with tiny details and textures to distinguish between the various surfaces. And with the feature illustration, which span across two double spreads, the idea was to create a sporting landscape with hints of construction. A thoroughly enjoyable commission to work on and hopefully more of the same in the future!

Cycling Plus Magazine Print
Cycling Plus magazine got in touch to ask if I could create a cover for their forthcoming Tour de France centenary special. They wanted a vintage look and feel that would encompass numerous elements relating to the last 100 years of the event. I came up with the idea of a set of different type faces displaying the names of iconic stages, climbs, riders and tour terminology and that as well as a cover could be created as a poster for the magazine's readers.

Tour de France Portraits
I was recently commissioned by Cycling Plus magazine in the UK to create a set of portraits for their 2013 Tour de France special issue. It's the centenary of the Tour this year and so here we have eight of the contenders for the yellow, green and king of the mountain jerseys with the additon of two tour legends.
The idea was to create the portraits in a style not too disimilar to the collectable vintage cards from the 1950's and 60s. A thoroughly enjoyable commission and will hopefully create more portraits in the near future. 2013 Digital Art, Illustration -
Tour de France Centenary Prints
2013 is the year of the 100th Tour de France. Over the course of its history, the Tour has witnessed legends in the making. However, the likes of Anquetil, Merckx and Hinault may come and go they are not the only form of the race that has become famous over the years. Just as important to the history of the event are the numerous towns and cities, mountains, climbs and descents that change each year.
To help celebrate the centenary I have created a selection of 12 stages from each decade of the Tour. From it's humble but grueling beginning in 1903, up to the Bradley Wiggins victory of 2012. Each print also has a colour motif that hints at the graphics and colours found on the tour.

Flight Tag Prints
Flight Tag Prints
Recently I stumbled on a lovely set of old airline baggage tags and was amazed at the variety in designs produced since the 1950s. There was something about the now iconic, easily reconisable three letter abbreviations of the city destinations, and the small surrounding details that I thought would look great blown up and on a wall. They often avoided logos, had no advertising, and were purely just the information you needed.
So with these graphic and typographic gems I decided to go ahead and turn them into large format wall prints. As with other ideas for prints that I have had, if they prove popular i'll make them available in my online shop this Spring. Enjoy! 2013 Graphic Design, Print Design, Typography -
Modus Magazine
These illustrations were created for Modus magazine and appeared over two spreads with a pipeline linking them both together. The article they help illustrate was all about low-cost carbon fuel storage.
I had to create two linking environments that illustrated how carbon fuel is created, transported and stored. It's always a pleasure to create this landscape scenes and I aim to create many more in the near future. 2012 Digital Art, Illustration -
WIRED Magazine / Shell II
This image was created for WIRED magazine for an editorial piece on innovation in relation to energy. How as the amount of energy we consume increases, and the way in which it is consumed becomes increasingly complex, from burning trees for warmth to highly-refined aviation fuel for space travel. Spot the caveman!

Newsweek Landscape
Newsweek over in New York got in touch to create a map/landscape of 'green' companies. The illustration had to include elements of being environmentally friendly, like wind turbines, solar panels, people cycling etc. Placing it on a stand alone island also helped make it standout on the spread.

Hollywood Reporter / Manhattan Map
The Hollywood reporter got in touch to ask about creating an illustrated map of the Manhattan borough of New York City. WIthin the map are various places the article touched upon. Cafe's, bookshops, restaurants, parks and night spots. It needed to a playful feel so here I didn't worry too much about scale but having destinations spring out of the map, with different character in situ. There are hints of the iconic elements of Manhattan such as the taxi's, the street signs and the harmonious colouring of the buildings. it's always interesting creating maps for various magazine and newspapers and always makes you want to travel to that destination!

Don't Forget the Cassette
Don't Forget the Cassette
This project started with an idea to fill my loft studio wall space. I often thought how there's a lot of talk about vinyl and the growing revival of that format. This lead me to explore the graphics and layout of cassette inlay designs. The popular C60 & 90 format in some ways is a design classic. The somewhat crude, simple typography and block colours would look great on a wall and so I thought i'd fill my walls with such prints.
Here I have taken the various elements and colours of the cassettes I could find and created them as wall prints. If the feedback of these prints is encouraging i'll make them available in my online shop very soon.

Howies / Pembrokeshire T-Shirt
Howies produce numerous t-shirts each year and as the Tour of Pembrokeshire approached so too did the guys from Cardigan Bay asking if I would like to illustrate a t-shirt for the event. This was the final design, a five colour screen print that encompasses the Pembrokeshire landscape with its rolling hills, coastal views and brilliant climbs that all add up for an epic day of cycling.

Iconic Cycling Jerseys
An idea crossed my mind recently about infusing my love of cycling and the Tour de France with a simple graphic approach to creating prints.
In the year that the Tour celebrates its centenary, I wanted to take a look back into the history. I've always loved the look, style and even feel of those old cycling jerseys. The colours, logos, type and design style always grabbed my attention and in many ways is what makes the Tour the big draw that it is.
I've highlighted the icons of the Tour, the likes of Fausto Coppi, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Tom Simpson, Raymond Poulidor and Robert Millar.
So here are a few ideas for forthcoming screen prints, giclee prints and postcards. At the moment I am creating these in my spare time but may open the ones I can up for sale on my online shop soon so watch this space.

Football World Cup Legends / Volume I
As the countdown to the World Cup in Brazil 2014 begins, I've created a handful of illustrative portraits of the legends of the tournament. These are the players who lit up the world with the performances at football's biggest stage.
Here we have Bobby Charlton, Pele, Johan Cruyff, Gary Lineker and Michel Platini.
Volume II will see the likes of Eusebio, Zico, Laudrup, Baggio and Zidane all feature.
As ever with these illustrations, if popular I will make them into a limited edition set of prints.

The greatest bike race of them all rolled off to a start in Liége, Belgium on Saturday 30th of June 2012, and just like last year I created illustrative prints of each day of the race.
This year there have been three categories of prints available, Tour Greats, Tour Scenic and Tour Type prints. Below is a selection of the prints currently available in the online shop at www.crayonfireshop.co.uk 2012 Illustration -

WIRED Magazine - Innovation
This image came about after creating a set of roughs for WIRED magazine. It was to accompany an article on innovation and great minds and how people in certain fields have to think of new ideas to develop and improve. Although this actual image was not used, and we went down another route, I still decided to develop it further and push it out there with my other work.

VINYL REVIVAL PRINT
As Independent Record Store Day approaches I wanted to create a print that captures the feelings conjured up from visiting your favourite old record shop, sifting through the music for hours or listening to records into the early hours. Wolf Print / Coming Soon
Thought it would be good to get a bit of feedback from this print.
It will be part of a trio of prints called the 'Wolf, the Owl & the Fox'. They will be available soon in A3 and 500 x 700 mm giclee prints but just wondered what people thought worked better. Black & white or the colour version? It may well be I produce both but always good to get some feedback.

Another teaser for what seems to be my 'cubist' phase at the moment with prints. Here's the first look at a new set of prints coming next year in January that celebrate the Greats of Formula One racing. Futurescape / Wired Magazine
Wired Magazine recently got in touch about creating a 'futurscape' illustration all about imagining what life would be like in 2025. The idea was to show the article in an infographic style within a future landscape. It was also created as part of the Wired Ipad magazine too with a few nice touches of animation added in.
It can be seen in the current April issue of the magazine in all good newsagents, and probably rubbish one's as well. 2012 Illustration -
Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race
This April sees the 158th Boat Race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The first ever race was held in 1829 and currently the score stands at 80 victories for Cambridge to Oxford's 76.
To commemorate the event I decided to create an illustrated print which shows both crews in action along the Putney to Hammersmith stretch of the River Thames. WIthin the print you can see details such as the Harrods Depository building, Craven Cottage, the home of Fulham Football Club and the popular drinking establishments of the Blue Anchor and Old Ship by the riverside in Hammersmith. There are also many other detailed nods to London that you may discover with each glance.

Aquitaine, France Map / Observer Newspaper

Celebration of September
Returning for its fourth year. Mortar & Pestle Studio in partnership with Adrem asked me to contribute a print to their Celebration of September Exhibition. Each artist was given a day in September to illustrate and I was given the 18th. As a keen cyclist it was great to have the same day as the Tour of Britain hitting London. So naturally I forged ahead and created a London inspired cycling print complete with a little nod to the London Underground logo.
